Leather is cut into strips that are then combined. The possibility of a linear configuration makes the leather completely usable; there is no install waste. Beltwalk, made by Keleen Leathers, is very hard wearing and durable. The vegetable tanned leather strips absorb the traces of use as they grow old, developing a beautiful patina over time. The product is dimensionally stable; it virtually does not shrink and the seams remain tight. It is easy to repair by pulling out a strip and replacing it. Beltwalk is biodegradable. Furthermore it is thermally and acoustically insulating. Being flexible Beltwalk is suitable for wrapping columns, but also for doors, walls and baseboards, and flooring.

Anyone that has missed the exhibition ‘Materia Into Craftsmanship’ as part of the Material Xperience last January, gets a second chance at the Materia Inspiration Centre in Amsterdam. The special exhibition shows examples of the renewed interest in craftsmanship among architects and designers.

Both architects and designers as well as the public recognize aspects of craftsmanship that support growing appreciation of values such as durability and authenticity. Craftsmanship might even play an important role in current globalization, adding values such as local tradition to the modern technology or contemporary design.

The exhibition shows examples such as the lighting fixtures by Rick Tegelaar, hand sculpted textiles by Helen Amy Murray, the embroidered bark cloth by Lenneke Langenhuijsen and the Cire Perdue-candlestick by Pascal Smelik. Other examples are the famous Smoke Dining Chair by Maarten Baas, the Gravity Stool, made of magnetic plastic by Jólan van der Wiel and the knitted fibre optics by Fay McCaul.

Besides the objects, pictures and videos give examples of the new craftsmanship. ‘Materia Into Craftsmanship’ can be seen at the Materia Inspiration Centre, where you can also see the permanent exhibition of materials. The exhibition will run until the end of March. Admission is free.
